Why Pacquiao is not training in the Wild Card Gym
Boxing fans especially the ones rooting for Manny Pacquiao knows that his usual training ground is Freddy Roach’s Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles. But for the Pacquiao Vs Cotto fight, our main man is currently on training here on our very own Baguio City, Philippines.
Pacquiao choose Baguio because of its elevation and his belief that he would be able to train in seclusion because of its remote location. Unfortunately for him, he can’t simply run away from his fans and the media especially now that he’s just a few hours of bus ride away. Even with his grueling sparring training, distractions are lurking at all corners and this is what his coach is worried about. Like when the recently super typhoons hit the Philippines, Pacquiao helped the typhoon victims on his day-off even after his coach said it was a bad idea for him to risk himself a risky trip from Baguio to Manila since the typhoon was still hammering the country.
So why is Pacquiao training here in the Philippines then? Bob Arum stated on one of his article in the LasVegasSun website that due to some IRS tax problems, Pacman’s camp decided to leave Los Angeles and continue his four weeks of training here in the our country.
I for one do not quite understand his predicament so let me just post the explanation of Bob Arum regarding this matter:
For those of you curious about such things, IRS rules provide that Manny would have a “substantial presence” in the United States and would therefore be subject to tax on his worldwide income – not just his US-based income – under the following circumstances:
If one-sixth of his days spent in America in 2007, plus one-third of the days spent in our country in 2008, are added to 100 percent of the days he was here in 2009, and if the resulting figure equals or exceeds 183 days (roughly six months, or half a year), that would establish what IRS calls a “substantial presence” and subject his worldwide income to U.S. income taxes.
That may be a good thing for our economy and trade deficit, but not so good for Manny and his missus. By training outside our borders for the next four weeks, Manny will avoid the dreaded “substantial presence” designation.

Whether or not he win this game, he’s still the no.1 fighter! Manny really has a good heart, but anyway thanks for posting Bob Arum’s statement on why Manny has to train here in the Philippines and not in the Wild Card Gym… Maybe Roach should not worry much about it as long as Manny is doing his own thing. Good Luck!
